How To Keep Your Pet Safe This Autumn

Date: 30 Oct 2026
By: admin

There’s a lot to enjoy as the leaves begin to turn and the parks and streets fill with golden colours. It’s
a favourite time for many of us and our dogs, especially those who love exploring in the rustling
leaves. But autumn brings a few extra hazards for pets, so it’s worth staying alert to the seasonal risks
while you take in the scenery.

Lungworm – The Hidden Danger

Out in the wetter weather, slugs and snails become more active. For dogs, especially curious pups,
even a playful nibble, or eating grass that’s been slimed, can expose them to lungworm. Foxes,
common visitors in our parks and gardens, also spread this parasite. Lungworm isn’t just
uncomfortable: it can be life-threatening if not spotted early. We recommend regular prevention – talk
to us about the right wormer (such as those from Elanco) for your pet’s lifestyle.

Conkers and Autumn Fruits

As much as they tempt children to collect them, conkers are a risk to our pets. Dogs in particular
sometimes pick them up while playing fetch, risking a gut blockage or, if they chew and swallow even
part of one, tummy upsets and, rarely, poisoning. Keep an eye out when walking near horse chestnut
trees, particularly with excitable or food-driven breeds. Likewise, acorns are best avoided.

Fireworks and Frights

Bonfire Night, Halloween and Diwali make autumn lively, but don’t forget that many pets find fireworks
frightening. Signs of stress might not always be dramatic: watch for hiding, pacing, or even just a tail
tucked under. It can help to keep pets inside after dark, make a safe den for them to retreat to, and try
to keep routines calm and predictable when you know fireworks are planned.

Halloween Sweets and Chocolates

Costumes and treats are good fun for people, less so for pets. Chocolate is especially dangerous for
dogs and cats, while sugar-free gum and some sweets contain xylitol, a serious toxin. Make sure
Halloween treats are safely out of reach, ask visitors to shut gates and doors, and supervise pets
when there are open sweets around. Cats nervous about callers or costumes will appreciate a quiet
hiding spot.

A Little Extra Care Goes a Long Way

If you notice anything out of the ordinary after an autumn walk, from coughing to upset tummies or
restlessness, get in touch with your local vet. Prevention, regular checks and sensible precautions are
the best way to keep enjoying the season. If you’d like advice about lungworm prevention or tips for
firework anxiety, our team are happy to help.
