Half Price Blood Pressure Check

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Normal blood pressure in cats is less than 160. If the pressure is consistently above 180 then hypertension is diagnosed, and your cat may need further treatment.

Is my cat at risk?

Not all causes of high blood pressure in cats have been identified but it is much more common in cats over the age of eight and overweight or obese cats.

High blood pressure can also be an indicator of another disease for instance kidney, thyroid, and heart disease are all causes of feline hypertension.

Are there symptoms I can look out for?

Problems with vision is one of the more common symptoms of feline hypertension. You may notice that your cat is bumping into objects in their path or seems uncertain when moving around.

If your cat suddenly starts drinking more water, urinating more often, is vomiting, or has sudden weight loss they should be seen by a vet as they may be indicative of a kidney problem. Other signs of high blood pressure can include seizures, fainting episodes, or nose bleeds.

What causes hypertension?

Feline hypertension is a common disease in older cats and is frequently diagnosed in association with other diseases. Chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are the most common diseases to result in hypertension, although in up to 20% of cases no underlying cause is found.

How is high blood pressure diagnosed?

A vet or nurse can measure blood pressure with a device that detects blood flow in arteries. The procedure is completely painless and very quick!

What is the long-term prognosis if my cat has hypertension?

Hypertension often goes undiagnosed in most cats and owners are usually blissfully unaware that there could be an issue. Early diagnosis followed by appropriate therapeutic management will help reduce the problems associated with this condition and prevent unnecessary suffering for your beloved cat.
